One of the most relevant feature of water based thermoplastic adhesives employed in not bearing hard wood structure is to obtain final joints with both higher mechanical properties than wood it self and creep resistance. Mechanical performance is related to the affinity between adhesive and substrate and it can be influenced by wood type, while the wood joint resistance to static load is affected by mechanical properties of the adhesive it self. Two classes of polymers with similar chemical composition, but synthesized in different ways were chosen, characterized using spectroscopic, calorimetric and morphological analysis and tested as adhesives according to international standards[1-2].Interestingly,they showed dramatic differences in the shear test: one class caused substrate cohesive failure, while the second showed a superficial adhesive detaching. Consequently correlation between different mechanical properties showed by the polymer tested and the adhesion mechanism involved were high lighted. In this way a new generation of Vinavil w/b polymer adhesive were synthesized and specific performances are put in evidence by the adoption of novel and promising technique that allows to "go beyond" traditional standards.
